ABOUT US

Overview

Scan Home was founded in the summer of 1983 by Carl and Barbara Propes. They shared a dream of bringing moderately-priced disassembled contemporary Scandinavian furniture to the Alaskan market. Five containers of furniture were imported that summer from Denmark as a test and sold at the old sports arena on Fireweed Lane (now occupied by Arctic Office Products). The following spring Carl and Barbara opened a 3,100 square foot store on West 36th Avenue in Anchorage. Carl and Barbara’s children, Lindsay and Alex, often played in the store while they were growing up and acted in some of our early TV ads. In 2005 Carl purchased Barbara’s interest in the business.

In 1996 Scan Home opened its first free-standing office furniture store. Since that time the locations have changed, we still operate a home and office furnishings store in the Dover Center in midtown Anchorage

Our Mission

Then, as now, Scan Home’s mission is to bring contemporary furniture from around the world to showcase for our customers in Alaska. Everything that Scan Home carries is intended to be of “good value”, whether it be some of our lower-priced merchandise or our higher-end exclusive styles.

Our Team

Scan Home has always been fortunate to have a team of highly-motivated hard-working employees. We like to think that working at Scan Home is more than a job – it’s like being with your extended family. Many if not most of our employees have been with us for 10, 15 or even 20 years or longer. It is not unusual for customers to come into our stores just to visit with our employees who are like their old friends, whether they’re shopping for furniture or not.

Our Green Commitment

Many years ago Scan Home determined that the most effective thing we could do to help the environment was to recycle the cardboard packaging material that nearly all of our furniture comes packaged in. Today it’s no longer an unusual idea but we continue to do it. In the past we have also helped to pick up garbage around Anchorage, retrofitted some of our locations for more energy-efficient lighting, etc.
